New Mexico Elk Landowner Tags information

New Mexico land owners can apply and receive an elk voucher from the state of New Mexico Game & Fish department. The applying landowner can request a unit wide voucher or a ranch only tag.

The unit wide tag can be used to hunt the stated sex of elk, elk tags can be issued for Mature Bull, Either Sex or Cow Elk and are typically weapon specific. Landowner tag buyers should always check to insure the tag they are purchasing is for the appropriate weapon and also the vouchers are typically for one weapon type only, archery only, muzzleloader only, rifle only, but can be issued for any weapon in some instances and in a handful of units hunters are eligible to hunt with a rifle or muzzleloader by purchasing the appropriate license when redeeming the landowner tag or voucher.

The landowner tag allows the holder/buyer to redeem/exchange his tag for the appropriate New Mexico Elk license by presenting the voucher at a state wildlife office and paying the appropriate fee. When the hunter has obtained his license he is then ready to go hunting in the unit tag is valid for and on the dates stated on license. Hunters must meet all state rules to legally hold a hunting license. If the tag is a unit wide tag; hunting can be done in the entire unit license is valid for on any public land that allows hunting and on any private land that received a unit wide elk tag for that year. This gets complicated and this is just to inform you, but please contact a New Mexico state Game and Fish officer or their website for more specifics. Licensed hunters can legally scout on appropriate private lands 2 days before season and hunt elk on private land if that landowner received unit wide tags again please contact a New Mexico Game & Fish officer as this is just for hunters that are not aware of basic functionality of New Mexico Elk  landowner tag system.
